Subject Psychological Thriller
(No spoilers in this review – just a description of my experience)
I have been reading so much non-fiction lately, it is rare for me to find a piece of fiction that seems to be worth my time. This is one of those rare gems.
This compelling page read is a page turner that you will have a hard time putting down from the very beginning. And it is perfect for you if you are a fan of British, Agatha Christie like, literature.
There is a slow build up of the characters and situations. All the characters are well defined and have strong personalities. The back story of the main character ( the narrator) is pretty well written and you can see his entire journey from childhood to the man he becomes.
There is insight into an artist’s mind and her turmoils along with her relationships. The parallel between her life story and that of the narrator is strong and explains the uncanny pull the narrator feels for her story and the need to ‘rescue’ her.
Several side characters, no matter how short their appearance, all seem to have clearly defined characters and participation in the main story. This is a very ‘put together’ book in terms of character development and plot. The editing is crisp and does full justice to the plot and characters without creating unnecessary length.
The final twist, in the last 20% of the book is certainly something you wouldn’t have seen coming and is revealed to your slowly but surely. The final reveal appears shocking in it’s implications.
Overall I believe this to be the main strength of the book – it is a thriller no doubt, but the unfolding of the surprises, twists and turns is unhurried and subtle. The resulting impact is profound and lasting.
This is undoubtedly a must read for those that enjoy psychological thrillers, British mysteries or just a great story. I would strongly recommend this book. On a scale of 1 to 5, I would unflinchingly give it a 5.
I listened to audio book which, in my opinion, is a superlative production and is followed by a brief interview with the author.
